New Puppy Supplies

When you first bring your new puppy home, the responsible dog breeder should give you a puppy pack of information regarding feeding, vaccinating, what puppy supplies are recommended along with general information about the breed.  A responsible breeder will also encourage you to keep in touch and ask questions regarding the bringing up of the puppy during the initial weeks and months of the puppy’s development.  Not sure what supplies to get – why not consider one of these puppy packs to help you get started?

Dog Water Bowl and Food Bowl

At least one water bowl and one food bowl will be a basic requirement.  You may prefer to have two of each – a water bowl for indoors and outdoors plus a food bowl for wet food and one for dry biscuits.  Check out the range of designer dog bowls and raised feeders at Muttropolis.com!
Dog bowls for food and water come so many different varieties.  It is important to choose one that is best for the size of your puppy, bearing in mind that you may need to buy larger sized bowls as the puppy grows into adulthood.

It’s natural for dogs to play with their food. Add a bit of fun to every bite with a Fun Feeder! Featuring meal-lengthening ridges and mazes, Fun Feeders keep pups engaged for up to 10 times longer at chow time.  Key benefits include: Promotes fun, healthy eating; Helps prevent bloat, regurgitation and canine obesity; Non-slip base to hold bowl in place; Top rack dishwasher safe; Made with high-quality, food safe material, BPA, PVC & phthalate free!

Puppies like to chew so it may be best to get a bowl that is not made out of plastic or material that can be destroyed to begin with.  Also consider getting your puppy a bowl that does not slip or slide as the puppy is eating or drinking.  Fancy feeding stands are becoming more popular or just a metal bowl with a rubber non-slip base will be adequate.  It might be best to stay away from stoneware or china bowls which could break if the puppy decides to play with them.

If you have a tiled or wooden floor area where your puppy will be eating then why not consider buying a puppy place-mat which will not only prevent the bowl from sliding around but also prevent messing on the floor.   Why not check out the great range of feeding mats at Chewy.com?

An alternative to the above, is to feed from chew toys or interactive dog bowls.  Not only does this keep your puppy occupied for longer but it prevents scoffing of the food which is not an ideal habit for the puppy to get into.

Dog Food

There are many puppy food brands on the market however it is best to continue on the same feeding regime as the breeder or place where you have acquired your puppy.  A sudden change in a dog’s feeding regime can result in your puppy having an upset stomach, vomiting and/or diarrhea.  A responsible dog breeder should give you all the information required for continuing on the puppy’s appropriate feeding regime and care.

It is quite likely that your breeder will have been feeding the puppies in the litter a premium brand of dog food or kibble.  These premium brands are specifically designed for puppy development and growth with a balanced nutrition.  The premium brand puppy food can be purchased at cheaper prices through online wholesalers.  You might want to check out the following for your puppy’s feeding requirements:

Dog Food Storage Containers

Another thing you should consider is how you are going to store the puppy food.  Your puppy may be on a feeding regime of either a mixture of wet and dry food, dry food or kibble only or wet food only.  Wet food, which includes cooked meat, dog meat rolls or canned food, should be stored in the fridge.  Canned food can be stored in the cupboard until it is open.  Once opened, it will then need to be stored in the fridge.

Dry food, dog biscuits and kibble, should be stored in airtight containers.

Dog Bedding and Sleeping Area

Your new puppy will require somewhere to sleep.  Initially, you may want to set up a laundry or bathroom for the sleeping area until the puppy settles into his new home.  A basic sleeping area should comprise of a comfortable bed, bowl of water and corner for a toilet area, plus a chew toy or two.  The bed should be as far from the toilet corner as possible.

Collar and Leash

From the day you bring your new puppy home it best to start getting the puppy used to having a collar and leash put on.  It’s not going to be long before you will be wanting to take your puppy out for walks, to the park, beach or training classes so a puppy collar and leash will be necessary.  A soft nylon puppy collar and leash is all that is required initially and then when you go on to participate in further training other types of collars and leashes might also be useful.

There are such a variety of puppy collars and leashes available – it is just a matter of getting one appropriate for your puppy.  You can get some great choices from these online stores: Muttropolis; ChewyAmazonPets Warehouse and PetCareRx.

Dog Toys

Engaging in play will be a fun thing for both you and your new puppy.  There are thousands of dog toys to choose from, so it can be daunting working out what will be best for your puppy.  A ‘must have’ toy is one or more chew toys, where you can put puppy food inside the toy which will keep your puppy occupied and engaged in trying to get it out.  These types of chew toys are great for prevention of boredom-type behaviors, such as barking, chewing on things they shouldn’t, digging and any other destructive or unwanted behavior.  While the puppy is engaged with trying to get the food out of the chew toy, then the other unwanted behaviors are not happening.  The most popular and well known chew toy is the Kong hard rubber toys.

You will find the best range of Kong and other chew and treat toys at Pets WarehousePuppy Treat Toys at Amazon; Puppy Chew Toys at Chewy. In Australia, puppy chew toys can be purchased at wholesale prices through Vet Products Direct!

Dog Crate or Puppy Pen

When you first bring your puppy home, confinement is going to be necessary until such time as the puppy has learnt the rules of the house, i.e. that it is not acceptable to toilet anywhere in the house or that furniture is not for chewing.  Confinement does not mean the puppy is locked up and never goes out, it simply means that this is a ‘safe space’ which belongs to him.  By having the puppy confined and taking him out every hour to toilet in the designated toilet area, rewarding for toileting in this area, he will soon learn that the house is not a toilet area and then he can earn his access room by room as he becomes fully toilet trained.  Training a puppy to enjoy his crate or puppy pen by using chew toys and eventually leaving the door open means he will learn that he can go to his area whenever he wants, eg. your puppy may wish to get away from boisterous children when he gets tired.

Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog
The star of the British television show Dogs with Dunbar has been teaching pet owners to train their dogs humanely and thoroughly for over 30 years. In this compassionate and honest volume, the veterinarian shares his definitive opinions about the way dogs should be trained. This is a great tool that anyone who wants to get a dog should peruse before they bring their pup home because, as the author points out, owning a dog is a big responsibility, and “millions of dogs are euthanized each year simply because their owners did not know how to housetrain or chewtoy-train them.” Dunbar includes information that prospective dog owners should know before they select a puppy, and he also explains how to meet his proscribed series of important Developmental Deadlines (two of which come up even before the dog reaches its new home!). In addition to a step-by-step guide to every stage of puppyhood, the book includes practical services, such as a pre-puppy shopping list and lists of the best dog training books and videos.
